“Febre do Rato” is a Brazilian expression which is typical for the area where the movie takes place. Can you explain what these expression means and why you’ve chosen it for the title of your movie?
“Rat fever” is an expression from Pernambuco/Brazil. It means you’re out of control, whether it’s good or bad. This title was chosen for the movie because it portrays the state of emotion that the poet lives in.
In Febre do Rato there are some main topics which seem to dominate the movie: poetry, sex and drugs. Which role does each of these play for the movie?
The human being is into this subject since the beginning of all. This poet is interpreting this world on his own way through sex, drugs and poetry.
Where do the poems come from which Zizo recites in Febre do Rato?
These poems are from the screenwriter, Hilton Lacerda. We wrote all this poems during his life.
There are a few very intimate scenes in Febre do Rato. Was it difficult to gain the confidence and trust of the actors?
No, it wasn’t difficult because they are producers of the film. When you know that the film is yours, nothing is difficult.
The village where the plot takes place seems a bit like a commune we know from the 1968 generation. Does this place have a living example?
This place is in the outskirts of Recife. This really exists.
What reaction do you expect from the audience of your movie? And what reaction do you hope for?
I hope they will be surprised. I would love to be there to see the audience’s reaction. I hope you will enjoy and hoping an honest reaction – even better if they would like it so much that they will promote the film and spread poetry.
Febre do Rato is your 3rd feature film after Amarelo Manga (2002) and Baixio das Bestas (2006). What connects these movies?
I would like to emphasize that this is not a trilogy. In my next film I will deal with the same universe. Yes they have in common human relationships, the lack of love, detachment and violence.
Your film Baixio das Bestas was part of the international competition at the IFFI in 2008. What connection do you have to Innsbruck and the IFFI?
I have an honorable relationship with the festival and I am very pleased that they are screening another film of mine. I wish good luck and success for the festival. Unfortunately I cannot come, due to the release of the film here in Brazil and also the pre -production of another project that I hope to be able to screen in Innsbruck too in the future.
